Do Volunteering by Teaching in India with SHAKEHANDS - International Volunteer Program

Teaching Program is going on in Government Primary Schools in rural areas of different state of India. The standard of teaching in these schools is usually very poor. They study in the absence of teaching aids and at many places students have to study in the open. In such schools teaching is only restricted to the textbooks which some times are also not available to them. Students do not get an opportunity to explore their skills and they are not able to increase their IQ as well as their general knowledge is also very limited, especially for English subject.

Whether you are coming to volunteering during your gap year, career break or an extended holiday, you will assist in a wide variety of chosen subjects and activities, including English, Mathematics, Arts and Sports.
The impact you have on the lives of your students will be obvious and long-lasting, but you will also be part of a much larger volunteer network, which is making a really positive contribution to the wider community.

Volunteer Opportunities Teaching in Schools with SHAKE HANDS

Volunteers are placed in schools in Dharmshala (Himachal), Jaipur and Jiliya (Rajasthan). Through our teaching project the language can put them in touch with the rest of the world. Volunteer will have a role to play on one of our teaching projects and you will be able to make a difference.

Our important aspect is that if you are coming to us directly; as individual / couple / groups you will also notice that our program cost is considerably lower than what your other/home country agency is offering. Without an extra agency in the chain of administration it is possible to give the individual volunteers the same low cost fee as we offer the agencies.
Or you can lend that money to help a group of women in Uganda get their dry foods store off the ground. With your help, thousands of individuals and small groups of aspiring businesses across underdeveloped and developing nations, now have a chance to make their own entrepreneurial dreams come true.

It’s all possible with Kiva.org, “the world's first person-to-person micro-lending website” whose mission is “to connect people through lending for the sake of alleviating poverty.” Kiva gives ordinary individuals like you and me the extraordinary opportunity to make a direct impact on people’s lives not simply by donating money, but by giving them the means to earn their own living, and the dignity to pay the loan back. It’s an empowering deal on both the lender and the lendee. For those of us lucky enough to be far removed from poverty, Kiva allows us a closer glimpse of how we can help alleviate it.
Impacts of climate change include increasing water scarcity and flood risk, along with decline in water quality. This study explores which ecosystems will be most impacted and analyses how the effects of climate change act as causes of additional emissions, thereby reinforcing global warming in a positive feedback loop. The paper was prepared for the European Parliament by cologic jointly with the institute for European Environmental Policies (IEEP) and the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE).

Dear Colleagues and Friends:

We are pleased to announce that the ICTE is now accepting
applications for the 2008-09 cycle of its International Guest Program. Many of you
have already met with our International Guests in the past and know
the outstanding individuals we select for this unique opportunity.

For those of you who are not familiar, each year the International
Guest Program welcomes 20-25 human rights leaders and peace educators
primarily from the Global South. These activists come for a 2-3 month
residency in Brooklyn, working within the ICTE community. The program
aims to support each guest's commitment to empowering local
communities in the promotion of tolerance, human rights, respect for
diversity and social justice. Individualized work plans are created
with the guests that involve networking, professional skills
training, opportunities to present their work, and time to reflect on their
ongoing efforts.

This year, we are placing a special emphasis on "Scholars and
Practitioners in the field of Tolerance Education". Therefore, we are
reaching out to all of you in the field and in academia. Please pass
these guidelines along to your colleagues who you feel are interested
and qualified for the program. The guidelines are attached to this
e-mail, and can also be found on our website:
http://www.seedsoftolerance.org/fgp.html. The deadline for
applications is January 21st, 2008.

Please circulate this information, and feel free to contact me if you
have any questions.
Thank you,

The 4th October 2007 was IYPF´s sixth birthday. We launched our new
direction - a strategy for action till the end of 2009; a new look
and website; an online membership system that allows self-management
and greater interactivity and connections; and our strategy on
climate change. More recently we have seen young professionals around
the globe Stand Up Against Poverty and in the 4 weeks since our
birthday our membership has grown by 15%. Next year, our plans are to
convene our third international
Summit in Manchester (UK), triple our membership, expand our
information services, advance our Funds for member projects and
activities, and release a new member magazine.

It is an exciting time for IYPF and we need the brightest young
professionals to join our Board to lead the organisation as we grow
and transform over the next 2 years.

This is your opportunity to nominate.

At our Annual General Meeting in December, IYPF members will vote to
the Board three new directors for a two-year term. Chuma, Kate and
myself will be continuing in to the second year of our terms, so we
need at least thee new nominees. You can read more about our current
Board here http://www.iypf.org/about_board.htm.

The IYPF Board of Directors governs the organisation, determines
strategy and direction, and oversees its operations. The Board also
operates three working groups that involve IYPF staff, members and
external stakeholders on Strategy, Fundraising and Compliance. It is
expected that board members take oversight or provide a significant
contribution to one of IYPF´s operational areas.

Being a director will require 5 hours per week, regular e-mail
communication, and regular meetings via Internet. It is a significant
and rewarding commitment and those considering nomination should
consider their existing commitments. You can read more on the
position here: http://www.iypf.org/about_board.htm.

An appointment as a Director will be from the IYPF's AGM in December
2007 until the AGM in 2009. At that point, the person may choose to
nominate to be elected to the Board for a second term. .

If you are a self driven, passionate young professional and leading
the development of the IYPF over the next two years appeals to your
sense of purpose and adventure, please go here
http://www.iypf.org/about_board.htm. to download a nomination form
and submit your nomination via e-mail to IYPF CEO, Cameron Neil, on
cameronneil@iypf.org.

Nominations are due no later than Friday 16 November 2007.

If you are not already a member - a prerequisite for being a Director
- you can become a member online today via our website:
http://www.iypf.org/membership.htm.

GYAN Employment Consultation / GYAN consultacion del empleo / GYAN Consultation Virtuelle sur l'Emploi

Dear GYAN member,

In February, the Commission for Social Development will meet for its
46th session on "Promoting full employment and decent work for all".
The Commission will discuss shifting trends in employment, as well as
policy suggestions for how to promote employment and decent work
around the world. This consultation provides an exciting opportunity
for GYAN members to contribute to this highly important debate as a
report on the results will be delivered to delegates at the dialogue.

Globalization and rapid technological development have given rise to
increased labor mobility, bringing new employment opportunities and
new uncertainties. These changes particularly effect youth. Today’s
young people are the most educated generation ever, with ever
increasing access to markets and communication. At the same time,
young people represent about half of the total unemployed global
workforce, but only one fifth of the world’s population. As youth are
facing this reality, their voice must be part of this debate. So
please take a moment to answer these questions for your chance to get
your voice heard!

The E-consultation will take place from October 18th until November
8th, 2007. To sign up for the consultation and find out more, please
visit here: http://groups.takingitglobal.org/gyanemployment or send a

Engineers Without Borders National Conference (Melbourne)
Nov 29th - Dec 1st 2007
Melbourne University

The 2007 EWB National Conference will focus on three themes:

Day 1: Engaging with Community

As development practitioners our challenge is to achieve the best
possible outcomes for communities. Although this is a simple mission
statement, achieving it requires constant reflection and
deliberation. To help us lay the foundations for productive
engagement with communities, day one of the conference will focus on
participatory approaches, valuing local knowledge and aspirations,
the role of appropriate technologies and how we evaluate impact.

Day 2: Working in the World

Development work does not happen in isolation. The world around us is
undergoing dramatic change and those least equipped to deal with
instability often feel its harshest consequences. Presenters will
encourage delegates to reflect on the interaction of the natural
environment, geo-political interests and conflict situations with
people in developing communities. We will explore how appropriate
development can build resilience and lay the foundations for a
sustainable and secure future.

Day 3: Response-Ability

How are we, as concerned Australians, able to respond? Fundamental to
our vision is our conviction that each individual has the ability and
the responsibility to make a positive impact in the world. On the
final day, presenters will explore strategies for making this vision
a reality. Delegates will learn from people and organizations who
are leading the way in responding to complex problems and be inspired
to take their own next step.

but still wish to acquire new skill sets and benefit from the option
of earning academic credit. The program is offered year round with
opportunities to earn "portable" academic credits, a Masters degree,
or a Graduate Certificate in Microfinance Management. It also serves
WORK-CAMPS!

There're some 4000 international work camps available each year in
more than 75 countries (in the North, mainly during the summer, in
the South, typically all year round). A work camp lasts between two
and three weeks, with 10 to 20 international participants. The aim of
a volunteering project would vary between social, environmental,
constructional, or educational purposes.

The project could be for instance to: Do a theatre-based fair trade
campaign at a fair trade festival in Denmark. Renovate a run-down
youth hostel in Japan. Play music and study nationalism in Serbia.
Build a school and participate in an AIDS awareness campaign in
Uganda. Study the roots of fascism and help with archives work in a
German KZ camp. Play with orphans in the US. Help at a wheelchair
race in Alaska. Learn how to bicycle and make food out of garbage in
Finland. And much more!

In MS Denmark (www.ms.dk), we see work camps as a cultural exchange
and campaigns tool that benefits local communities, and thereby
fighting poverty. The work camp movement started after the 2 world
wars and is still about peace, development, breaking down
stereotypes, leadership

To sign up as a leader or to participant in a work camp, you need to
contact the work camp organisation in your country. One of the
following URLs should help you find it!
3. Sept 1112: National conference: Sustainable development Local
Government: Melbourne

Dear Colleague,

The Local Government Sustainable Development 2007 conference, being
hosted by Environs Australia, is shaping up to be a great success. It
will be held in Melbourne on September 1112 at the Hilton on the
Park Hotel. For details about the conference, please visit the
website
http://www.halledit.com.au/conferences/sustainability/2007

As with last year's inaugural conference, we are anticipating more
than 150 delegates from across Australia. If you are planning to
attend this important event, it is vital that you book early. There
is an international soccer match being played on the evening of
September 11 in Melbourne between Australia and Argentina, and there
will be pressure on available rooms in the immediate vicinity of the
MCG.

The organisers, Hallmark Conferences, have secured a block booking of
rooms at the Hilton which will be available to those delegates who
book early. I would therefore urge delegates to book their attendance
at the conference as soon as possible, and to advise Hallmark whether
you want to utilise the booking arrangement that Hallmark has made
with the Hilton. Hallmark can be reached on 03 8534 5021 or email
denise.mcqueen@halledit.com.au

I look forward to catching up with you at the conference
4. Oxfam Celebrates Youth -- International Youth Day, 12 August 2007

Oxfam Celebrates Youth as a Global Force for Positive Change on
International Youth Day, 12 August 2007

Oxfam Australia celebrates the positive difference that young people
are making in communities worldwide by highlighting the work of 19
young Australian participants in the Oxfam International Youth
Partnership (OIYP) program to mark International Youth Day, 12 August
2007.

"'Be seen, be heard' is the 2007 International Youth Day theme and
the OIYP participants -- we call them Action Partners -- are making
themselves heard and seen every day, working for positive,
sustainable change in their communities in Australia and in 300 other
countries round the world. They really are a global force for
change!" said May Miller-Dawkins, Coordinator of the Oxfam
International Youth Partnerships program.

The 19 Australian OIYP Action Partners -- 17 are from indigenous
communities -- are all working on different projects to improve
community life. These include improving access to health or social
services, addressing gender based violence, or increasing
opportunities for people to have more control over the decisions that
affect their lives.

Patrick Mau, a 24 year old musician from Horn Island in the Torres
Straits, uses music to create opportunities for young islanders.
"There are so few facilities for young people here on Horn Island and
they have been exposed to drugs and violence so young. So helping
them to express themselves through the music and art of the Torres
Straits builds their confidence. They can be positive role models
and prove to others that we can change things for the better."

Jirra Harvey, 24, is a journalist and project officer in the
University of Melbourne's Centre for Indigenous Affairs. She sees
the media as a potentially positive vehicle for expressing the
indigenous community's voice, even though it has also represented
indigenous people in a negative stereotyped light. "I don't want us
just to have 'a voice', but to have many voices. I want the next
generation to express their Aboriginality in a multitude of ways,
not be held back by stereotype. As a journalist, I can help make
this happen."

All the OIYP Action Partners from Australia and round the world will
be coming together at a week-long event in October to be held Sydney.
The event, titled 'Kaleidoscope', kicks off a three year program to
provide them with opportunities to develop their skills, knowledge
and understanding, and make a sustained contribution to positive
global change. Throughout this process, they will be supported by
Oxfam Australia and its Oxfam partners internationally.

While Oxfam International Youth Partnerships focus on young peoples'
role in development Oxfam Australia's Close the Gap Campaign is
working with Indigenous Communities for health equality and positive
sustainable change. (The Close the Gap photo exhibition will be
launched in Canberra on August 9 in anticipation of the National Day
of Action on September 18.)

++++++++++++++++++

5. Smart Green Schools, PhD Scholarships, apply by Sept 20

2 PhD Scholarships available in Architecture, Sustainability and
Education

Applications are invited for two PhD scholarships funded by the
Australian Research Council. You will work as part of a diverse team
of academics and industry partners including the Department of
Education (Victoria), the Office of the Victorian Government
Architect and a number of award winning architecture firms. The
research aims are to better understand the integration of pedagogy
and sustainability in the architectural design of schools.

The scholarships are valued at AUD $30,000 tax free p.a. for three
years. This is an opportunity for you to develop cutting edge
knowledge about how space, form, education and sustainability are
interlinked.

The deadline for applications is 20 September 2007. Applicants
should respond to the position description available on the Faculty
The fact that the life expectancy of Indigenous People continues to
lag 17 years behind other Australians begs a number of questions. Why
it has taken so long to muster the political will to address this
situation? What has prevented us from providing long-term sustainable
solutions in the past? What is the relationship between Indigenous
health and other essential rights? How can the new-found focus on
Indigenous health be sustained? What are the priorities for action if
we are serious about preventing the status quo from continuing?

Andrew Hewett will explore these questions and share some insights on
the growing movement to close the gap in Indigenous life expectancy.

For Immediate Release
www.GKPEventsOnTheFuture.org/MediaZone/PressReleases

GKP Excited with Strong Response for Global Young Social
Entrepreneurs´ Competition

Kuala Lumpur, 31 July 2007 - Young social entrepreneurs around the
world have been mobilised! Global Knowledge Partnership (GKP)
announced yesterday that more than 225 young entrepreneurs have
logged onto www.globalknowledge.org/ysef07 to apply for the Global
Young Social Entrepreneurs´ Competition.

According to Rinalia Abdul Rahim, Executive Director of the GKP
Secretariat in Kuala Lumpur, "We are overwhelmed by the positive
response that we have garnered thus far. The quality of applications
that we have received is an indication of the immense interest and
potential in social entrepreneurship that harnesses Information and
Communication Technology (ICT)".

"We have received applications from all over the world - from the
Philippines, to Pakistan, to Ghana and Kenya. This truly global
competition will recognise the creativity, passion and talent of
youth across world and will act as a launchpad for them to achieve
their full capabilities", she added.

One such social enterprise entered so far is Kenya-based EDTEC, an
organisation which envisions an empowered community with equal access
to resources. According to the organisation´s founder, Kennedy
Onyango, "a lack of access to information due to limited use of ICT
by the most vulnerable, such as youth and women, provides a breeding
ground for poverty." He continued to say that EdTECH is concerned
with the welfare of youth, since youth remain the agents of change in
their respective communities.

Many young people have an interest in contributing towards a better
future, but job offers in the traditional development sector are
limited. A social enterprise with its double or triple bottom-line
allows them to both earn an income and realise their passion for
positive social and/or environmental impact. Their social business
model also addresses the challenge of financial sustainability that
many traditional, grant-funded development projects face.

Through the competition GKP will select 100 winners who will be
sponsored to attend the up coming Young Social Entrepreneurs Forum at
the Third Global Knowledge Conference, GK3, in Kuala Lumpur.
www.GKPEventsontheFuture.org <http://www.gkpeventsonthefuture.org/>

The competition is fully web-based and is open to all regions of the
globe, and closes on 15 August 2007. The competition will be judged
by an independent online jury and the winners will be announced on 1
October 2007. Application details and jury evaluation results will be
viewable to the public who will also be able to post comments at
www.globalknowledge.org/ysecompetition07

At the Forum, 10 of the winners will `pitch´ their enterprises to
experts to secure funding. All 100 winners will take part in a
dedicated networking session; meet various funding organisations,
mentors, experts and other stakeholders; be part of a crowd of
innovative and motivated young people; mingle and network with the
2000 general GK3 participants and showcase their social businesses.

Themed "Spearheading the Future", the Young Social Entrepreneurs´
Forum @ GK3 targets 250 participants. The 100 young social
entrepreneurs from all around the globe will meet with a community of
funding organisations, experts, mentors and other stakeholders and
engage in two real-time pitching sessions and two innovative and
interactive thematic sessions.

The Global Competition, the Young Social Entrepreneurs´ Forum and GK3
are organised by Global Knowledge Partnership (GKP);
· Why do we need a spiritual business? The great possibilities for
businesses to support sustainable development locally and globally

Last year, millions of Peace builders participated in a historic Peace Day, with over 3500 events in 200 countries! This year, the International Secretariat of CPI is delighted to offer an unprecedented opportunity, as we build a global campaign for Peace on International Day of Peace, September 21st. In preparation for Peace Day, we would like to invite you to use our new online platform, Wiser Earth, designed to help visualize the scope of the extraordinary activities of Peace builders around the world. Wiser Earth (www.wiserearth.org) is a free and international online directory that links together the hundreds of thousands of organizations worldwide working for Peace through social justice and the environment. Starting today, you can post information about your upcoming Peace Day events, as well as reports from previous years! We encourage you to visit the International Day of Peace page on Wiser Earth. From there, you can find out how to post your activities, using keyword "Peace Day".

Paste this link into your web browser for easy access:
www.wiserearth.org/article/3f5802a0086e0932c53aeddf85ca96cb

The advantages of the CPI platform on WiserEarth are many:
· You can search among over 100,000 organizations, as well as events and resources, by location, keyword or 372 different areas of focus.
You can also add organizations, events resources and jobs under these same categories.
· If you are a small organization, WiserEarth can replace the need for your own website.
· Since WiserEarth is multilingual, information can be entered and read in your native language.
· WiserEarth also offers free postings for recruiting staff, volunteers and interns.
· You can also visit the CPI community hub on WiserEarth directly, by using the following link:

OVERALL GOAL:
The aim of this project is to strengthen the capacities of young
people in leadership, peace building, democracy, good governance,
grassroots mobilization and sensitization for civic
responsibilities. By increasing access to training and capacity
development skills, young people will be encouraged to further
develop their leadership skills to effectively deal with issues
affecting their participation in decision making process,
governance, and democratic structures.

BACKGROUND:
The region of West Africa is strategic in Africa basically composed
of about fifteen countries which includes Nigeria; The presumed
giant of Africa and the most populous black nation in the world.
This region, through its regional decision-making institution, the
Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has in recent
times made a number of strives to help address the multifaceted
problems that have continuously confronted the people of West
Africa
over the last three decades. Despite its relatively good efforts,
especially in the area of peace building, but the issues of bad
governance, transparency, political crisis and collapse political
transition processes continues to haunt the West Africa sub-region.

But it is worrisome to know that Nigeria the presumed giant of
Africa and a major key player in the West Africa sub-region is off
the track of effective leadership and good governance and the
present transition to elect another leader is of major concern. The
leadership of Nigeria continues to teach the present day youth with
leadership qualities that can not move the nation forward and
continues to refuse to create an enabling political and legal
environment for economic growth and sustainable development.
Nigeria
is still battling with successful transition. It is important to
note that we are at the moment walking on the threshold of chaos if
nothing is done to overhaul the leadership situation of the
Nigerian
state.

As a matter of fact, Nigeria has never been priviledged to be
governed by a leader. On the other hand, she has only been ruled
over the years by various individuals ranging from despotic
military
rulers to autocratic and dictatorial civilian governments. This in
actual sense has affected the present day youth to the point of
disaster.

Today, we do not have youth that are capable or sure of themselves.
Rather, they have been reduced to mere echoes in the society. If
the
future of Nigeria and Africa is to be guaranteed, the present day
youth needed to be rescued from the hands of mediocrity, ignorance
and lack of sense of purpose that has bedeviled the youth
population
in our society. This is pertinent because we have so much untrained
and unprepared leaders, finding themselves in positions of
authority
in our polity today. They could not but wreck more havoc because of
where they were coming from.

In the area of democratic transitions, Nigeria is still largely
battling with successive transition where previous transitions are
marred by violence and massive rigging, laying claim to arguments
that there are still problems in the areas of transparent election
and governance in Nigeria.

These problems have induced the explosive growth of civil society
groups and youth groups who have emerged to promote and defend
various interests. In Nigeria, 75% of the population is under 28
years of age. This is an immense target group, which lacked the
basic resources, access to knowledge, skill, training and decision
making structures. Tragically, the youth are still marginalized,
both in terms of formal participation in politics and in
influencing
public policy in vital areas such as leadership, education, and
governance and electioneering process. The full participation and
involvement of young people is relevant to ensuring good governance
and sound leadership in Nigeria.

The key challenge is how to mobilize and harness young people's
energies to transform governance systems in order to grant them
genuine representation. It is also now more widely accepted that
youth's perspectives are needed at all levels of decision-making if
Nigeria is to achieve its sustainable development goals. Young
people need to be empowered and to prepare them not only for future
leadership but also to begin to play a more proactive role in
today’s leadership, governance and electioneering process in
Nigeria.

OBJECTIVES:

- To train 60 youth in leadership, peace building, and grassroots
electoral involvement.

- To equip youth with skills in electoral mobilization and
sensitization campaign

-To train youth to serve as election observers and monitors.

-To empower young people by increasing their knowledge and
understanding of leadership, governance, democracy, human rights
and
conflict resolution;

-To facilitate an exchange of experience and practices amongst
youth
leaders;

-To develop and strengthen a national pool of young leaders,
democrats, human rights defenders and peace builders to work with
relevant stakeholders in the country;

-To increase youth participation in governance systems in order to
grant them genuine representation in decision making institutions;

-To impulse the participation of young Nigerians in creative and
analytical leadership thinking aimed at bridging the gaps between
theory and practice both locally and nationally;
