Bright Young Minds Summit 2007

From: "David Price"

Brightest Young Minds In a nutshell BYM is a not for profit organisation that selects the 100 most likely future leaders of Australia in all areas (from science, to politics, to the arts). We gather these 100 at a summit (inaugural Australian summit 21-25 Jan 2007), which educates how social responsibility enhances their personal success. They also brainstorm solutions and launch initiatives (viable ones get corporate or government backing) to address pressing issues facing the country. Throughout the summit they are addressed by leading visionaries, such as Tim Costello, David Bussau etc (see www.bym.com.au for a complete list)

The programme has been running in South Africa for 7 years and has led to initiatives such as:

I. Two of the 2002 delegates led a team to launch Tsiba, which is a totally free university based in Cape Town, South Africa. Tsiba offers A-rated business degrees to previously disadvantaged South Africans who are unable to afford university fees (it currently admits 80 students per year). On its current growth path Tsiba will soon offer degrees to hundreds of students per year. (www.tsiba.org.za)

“The education offered is designed to make students relevant, truly empowered, integrated citizens and leaders that are skilled and equipped to build the South African economy and society.” ~South African President Thabo Mbeki talking in paliament about CIDA which is the Johannesburg campus in the same model as Tsiba.

II. A delegate along with 5 other individuals started a charity called The Mindset Network. The Mindset Network aims to assist the poverty-stricken on a mass scale with the issues of health, schooling, and livelihood. Within 2 years she helped grow the charity to ten times it original size. It is now endorsed by the Government’s Department of Health, Department of Education and Department of Communication. It currently employs a staff of over 60 people. (www.mindset.co.za)

“Mindset is the best comprehensive programme I have seen so far that addresses the key constraints to enhance the quality of education in South Africa.” ~Dr. Mamphela Ramphele, Managing Director, World Bank, April 2003

III. Three 2004 BYM delegates are setting up a Model United Nations for the entire African Union for the promotion of the ‘African Renaissance’

IV. A 2003 delegate set up an import business called Sapna (“dreams”) –this is considered a social venture as it provides many jobs in a country with 40% unemployment.

V. A 2003 delegate set up a community scholarship scheme – for the disadvantaged in Durban, South Africa

VI. A 2003 delegate set up the Learners' Lifeskills Centre at Manenberg High on the Cape Flats. This organization teaches necessary lifeskills to school children who do not have a stable home environment. This is a pilot programme and if successful will be replicated in other schools.

VII. A 2003 delegate is setting up an organization that inspires and assists adult female factory workers to finish their high schooling.

VIII. A 2002 delegate (with assistance from the The Shuttleworth Foundation) set up Twenty30 which is a volunteer consulting model. This organization gets young professionals to volunteer and mentor youths in Soweto – a township with shacks with little access to water and electricity. This model will be replicated in 2006 in other South African townships.

IX. A 2002 delegate initiated the Colloquium for Social Entrepreneurs which has the objectives to build a network of Social Entrepreneurs in Southern Africa, develop a body of knowledge on Social Entrepreneurship and support the effectiveness of Social Entrepreneurs in the NGO sector

The application period has been extended, and now closes on midnight Nov 29

Regards,

The BYM Team
