World Youth Day for Democracy, October 18

This year, the World Youth Day for Democracy will focus on highlighting what youth are already doing in their communities - both to help us all get a better idea of the diversity of youth contributions to democracy building and to inspire new activities and collaboration in the future.

For ideas and inspiration on what to plan, please see the WYMD website, where you will find resources to help you plan, ideas on kinds of activities, and information on current campaigns by major human rights organisations. The international secretariat will also highlight organized activities on the WYMD website, send out information on particularly successful events, and share stories about the different activities to inspire future activities. Keep checking the website to see if any activities are being planned near you!

So, please if you are planning something in your community, share it with other WYMD members
by sending details to: wymd@youthlink.org.

A few activities currently planned by WYMD participants include:

PALESTINE: Consultation on Youth Perspectives on Democracy - Panorama Center (www.panoramacenter.org) Workshops held by young activists in Palestine to discuss and evaluate ideas on democracy and engagement of Palestinian youth in democracy.

BRAZIL: Youth in Debate - Discussions with Candidates for Public Office Aracati - Agency of Social Mobilization (www.aracati.org.br - Portuguese) Global Youth Action Network (www.youthlink.org), National campaign for youth participation in the 2006 Brazilian elections,
based around the organization of debates between gubernatorial candidates.

TAIWAN: Youth Democracy Barometer: A survey of youth perspectives on democracy - Taiwan Youth for Democracy in Asia (TYDA) (http://www.tfd.org.tw/TYDA/index_english.htm). This project will collect and examine critical questions important to youth on the current state and future course of Taiwan's democracy, to be used to address youths' concerns.

For more information on these and other activities, check out the World Youth Day for Democracy page! www.ymd.youthlink.org/ymd/launchday.html

Democracy Online Day?
From Steven Clift's Democracy Online blog: http://www.dowire.org/notes/?p=282

Democracy Online Day - Let’s sign-up to create our own holiday? How about a Democracy Online Day every October 17th?

Share your celebration plans here: www.dowire.org/wiki/Democracy_Online_Day

Take the pledge via PledgeBank and invite others: www.pledgebank.com/democracyonline

Back in 1998, when working for the Markle Foundation’s Web White & Blue effort we had a simple concept. Declare a day to celebrate and promotion election content on the Internet. It generated extensive media coverage and gave folks in the trenches of e-democracy/e-politics a chance to celebrate their efforts.

Let’s broaden that concept to all democracy-related content providers from governments to candidates to bloggers and media. While it may seem like most people in your circles use the Internet for democratic/political purposes, the potential (and reality) is not that well known among the general public. Just like like TV Turn Off Week (I am thinking about proposed a No E-mail Day).

Young African Activist Summit, Feb 2007

From Pochi Tamba: I am writing to inform you about the Young African Activist' Summit that is holding in Cameroon in February 2007. The theme for this year's pioneer event is "partnerships for sustainable development", how we African activists can efficiently share information and resources among ourselves to better achieve our goals. At the end of this summit, we shall create a network to work that out. Please feel free to get information or spread the word. You can read more on this through the following link: http://projects.takingitglobal.org/yaas/about/
