1. FORUM ON NGO 'SUSTAINABILITY PERFORMANCE' CERTIFICATION SCHEMES (MELB, NOVEMBER 14)
Our next forum is on the 14th of November, from 10-1pm @ Futureye's Boardroom (Level 2, 388 Bourke St, Melbourne):
Topic: 'Building credibility through certification'
Futureye invites you to discuss the role(s) of independent NGO sustainability certification program (such as Stewardship Councils, certification initiatives and eco-labelling projects) and to consider their future. This forum provides a unique opportunity to hear both industry and NGO perspectives. Do these complex multi-stakeholder schemes build credibility? What other benefits do those involved enjoy? How could they be improved? What are the barriers to their success?
Each speaker will share their personal and company or organisational experiences, successes and challenges, and views on independent certification, for approximately 30mins. The final hour and half opened up for group discussion and debate.
Speakers:
* Ian Wood, Vice President of Sustainable Development and Community Relations, BHP Billiton, discussing the Mining Certification Project
* Malcolm Tonkin, Manager of Environmental Services, Hancock Victoria Plantations, discussing the Forest Stewardship Council
* Duncan Leadbitter, Regional Director - Asia Pacific, Marine Stewardship Council
The cost to attend is $75 (+GST) for NGO representatives and $150 (+GST) for Government/Corporate representatives. Morning tea and a light lunch will be provided. The maximum attendance is 25 people (to keep the forum "round table" in style, and to ensure everyone gets to participate fully in the discussion and debate following the presentations) so please let us know ASAP if you'd like to attend.
To RSVP please reply to this email (stephen@futureye.com), and an invoice will be sent to you, give our office a call on (03) 9642 2088, or complete the fax-back credit card payment form on the page 2 of the attached invitation (if it stays attached with this forwarded message - fingers crossed!).
If you could please forward on the details to any potentially interested colleagues, etc, that'd be MUCH APPECIATED.
Best regards,

for Sustainable Community Development
Engineers Without Borders Australia is a non-profit organisation that works with disadvantaged communities to improve their quality of life through the education and implementation of sustainable engineering projects. This new organisation was established in April 2003 and now has over 1500 members.
Engineers Without Borders Australia works in partnership with developing communities to achieve environmentally sustainable, socially responsible and economically viable solutions within the context of their engineering problems. The organisation also aims to educate the Australian community on issues of environment, technology and the plight of disadvantaged communities around the world. Through the process of helping people in need, we become more socially aware and responsible, improve ourselves and inspire others to action.
Engineers Without Borders Queensland is holding a band night called Rock Without Borders on Sunday 30 October at the Rev, Fortitude Valley. This event follows Anti-Poverty Week (16 October to 22 October 2005) and will raise awareness about Engineers Without Borders Australia and what you can do to make positive contribution to reducing poverty and empowering people.
Rock Without Borders will include great local and regional bands Glasshouse, De Jah Dan Dah, Sol Terra, Elijah, Showpony, The Electric Spurs and DizzyGotheca, plus acoustic soloist Lesha. DJ Hutch will be spinning grooves and funkiness between bands. This event will start late Sunday afternoon with a barbeque. Tickets cost $10 each and will be available at the door.
Funds raised from Rock Without Borders will assist local and international Engineers Without Borders Australia projects such as computer access and support for refugees here in Australia, the Uluru Children's Home Facility Expansion planning and solar lighting in West Timor and South Africa.
