6. The State of the Right to Education Worldwide: Free or Fee: 2006 Global Report

Human Rights - Child's Right to Education: This is a fascinating report on the state of the world's education today, and on the child's rights to education and what this really means. Globally, current education is in disarray, despite United Nations’ programs on human rights mainstreaming and rights-based development. Its denial is epitomized in pricing public education out of the reach of the poor. No less than 22 different types of charges are levied in primary school, which should legally be free. Human rights law, which mandates education to be free and compulsory, has been cast aside and the financial responsibility for education privatised. The State of the Right to Education Worldwide. Free or Fee: 2006 Global Report summarizes in 281 pages shortcomings of the global policy-making and then examines how the right to education fares in 170 countries. It highlights the abyss between domestic policies of wealthy creditor and donor governments which keep compulsory education free, and their external policies which have made it for-fee.

7. "Mobilizing Partnerships for Social Change", April 2007, Community-Campus Partnerships for Health 10th Anniversary Conference

Community-Campus Partnerships for Health 10th Anniversary Conference
"Mobilizing Partnerships for Social Change"
April 11 - 14, 2007 in Toronto ON Canada
Details at: www.ccph.info

How do we combine the knowledge and wisdom in communities and in academic institutions to solve the major health, social and economic challenges facing our society? How do we ensure that community-driven social change is central to service-learning and community-based participatory research?

Community-Campus Partnerships for Health (CCPH) is convening our 10th anniversary conference, April 11-14, 2007 in Toronto, to nurture a growing network of community-campus partnerships that are striving to achieve the systems and policy changes needed to address the root causes of health, social and economic inequalities. The conference seeks to build knowledge, skills and actions for achieving healthy and just societies.

We invite you to share your knowledge, experience and lessons learned with hundreds of colleagues who - like you - are passionate about the power of partnerships to transform communities and academe.

The conference planning committee is looking for proposals that address one or more of these sub-themes:
*Understanding and Addressing the Social Determinants of Health
*From Grassroots Movements to Policy Change
*Communities as Centers of Learning, Discovery and Engagement
*Developing the Science of Community-Based or Practice-Based Evidence

Proposals are sought for these session formats:
*Pre-conference intensive workshops
*Skill-building workshops
*Story sessions
*Challenges consultation sessions
*Film screening and discussion sessions
*Posters
*Thematic posters

This CCPH conference in particular is notable for a number of reasons:

*It celebrates our 10th anniversary, allowing us to reflect on our history and evolution and engage stakeholders in determining our future directions.

*It is our first conference held in Canada, presenting unprecedented opportunities to learn from Canadian experiences with community-campus partnerships and the social determinants of health, and to explore synergies across North America and beyond.

*It takes place in one of the most diverse cities in the world, enabling us to explore critical issues of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, wealth and culture.

*It represents an important product of our partnership with the Wellesley Institute (www.wellesleyinstitute.com), the Toronto-based organization that advances the social determinants of health through rigorous community-based research, reciprocal capacity building, and the informing of public policy.

We hope you can join us in Toronto next spring!

New adult program based on Youth LEAD:
‘Leading with the Heart’, Bucketty NSW (just north of Sydney) – 13-15 October 2006

http://www.ozgreen.org.au (follow the links from What’s New)

What is Youth LEAD?
Youth LEAD is an Oz GREEN initiative that is building a national network of young leaders who are working in their local community and beyond to build a life-sustaining society. Youth LEAD is achieving this through leadership training and mentoring for youth-led eco-social projects that forge pathways to sustainable futures. Youth LEAD begins where other leadership programs finish – with young people learning to be leaders by designing and undertaking their own projects.

Why get involved?
Have you ever wanted to do something but aren’t sure how you can make a difference or where to start? Are you already doing lots but want to reflect, refocus or recharge? No matter what your concerns and where you’re at, Youth LEAD can help you strengthen skills and create a plan for action to really do something significant.

We provide the space, support, nurturing and training to give you the confidence, motivation and skills to develop plans and put them into action. And to refocus on and invigorate your current plans. We work from the principle that the answers to problems lie within people and within communities. Youth LEAD is a transformative process that enables people to tap into these answers, to be themselves, do what makes their heart sing, AND make a real difference in the world!

The Program
Each Youth LEAD program involves a 3-day training and action planning residential workshop for participants aged 15-25. The workshop features skills training in:
· ecological footprint assessment and lifestyle analysis
· strategic questioning, deep listening and critical thinking
· rational and emotional intelligence
· creative thinking, values and visioning
· goal setting and action planning for lifestyle changes and eco-social action

After the workshop there will be follow-up meetings and regular phone and email contact with all participants for mentoring and support. And opportunities to join our trainee facilitator, mentor and volunteer programs.

Youth LEAD is currently being documented as a case study in best practice education for sustainability by the Australian Association for Environmental Education (2006). Youth LEAD is also a previous winner of the Social Ventures Australia BIG BOOST! Award

Through Youth LEAD, young people:
· Clarify what is important to them
· Find inspiration and focus to make informed life choices
· Develop confidence to live from their own values and integrity
· Reflect on and re-energise the difference they already make in their lives
· Develop and strengthen skills to understand, analyse, vision and plan
· Be leaders of positive change
· Understand local and global environmental challenges
· Learn to live sustainably and reduce ecological footprint (average 29%)
· Harness their passion, creativity and intelligence to build a better world
· Join a supportive inspiring community of young people
· Become themselves

About the Facilitators

They each bring over 30 years of experience and professional qualifications in environmental education, social enterprise and youth empowerment gained on the ground in city and rural settings in Australia and internationally. "Universities for Health: Improving Wellbeing for All Communities"
Monday 20th to Tuesday 21st November 2006

*Judith Ramaley, President, Winona State University,
*Mara Adelman, Associate Professor, Communication/Journalism and Director, Academic Salons, Seattle University

Universities have long been identified as settings for promoting health and wellbeing, and promoting a holistic notion of people as members of civic society. Recently, in both Australia and the United States, this focus has faced numerous threats, including: funding cuts, corporatisation, and international competition, a loss of student vitality, and loss of community citizenship.

University-community partnerships are critical for:
* community interventions that seek to improve the health of communities;
* urban regeneration programs;
* the delivery of health and social services; and
* the preparation of students as members of a civic society.

Healthy partnerships are critical to the representation of the university as a community member, engaged with its civic responsibilities. They are a critical mechanism for achieving societal based aspirations for the contributions that universities can make in shaping future societies. This Symposium will explore international best practice in promoting community health and wellbeing through innovative forms of university-community engagement.

The program aims to stimulate a national campaign to change the way Australian universities think about, and engage with, their communities.

5. Urban Agriculture: Peak Oil, Cuba & the Salad Bar, Sydney, 14 Sept

6:00pm Thursday 14 September
Contact: Phuong
environmentconvenor@usu.usyd.edu.au
www.vergeartsfestival.com/events/CityFut

ALT1, Wilkinson Building, University of Sydney
Transport: Walk, cycle, use public transport - www.131500.com.au

A screening of "The Power of Community: how Cuba survived peak oil" and a talk by Mike Horne of TURF Design on "Salad Bar". This event is run as part of the University of Sydney's VERGE Arts Festival and the Architecture Faculty's series of Thursday Night Lectures.

When Cuba lost access to Soviet oil in the early 1990s, the country faced an immediate crisis - feeding the population- and an ongoing challenge: how to create a low energy society. At a time of 'inconvenient truths' Cuba's urban agriculture demonstrates an alternative future. This is documented in the film " the Power of Community: how Cuba survived peak oil?" These timely ideas will be brought back home through the example of the Sydney salad bar designed by Sydney landscape architect Mike Horne.

TURF Design is led by landscape architect Mike Horne. TURF combines an intuitive, site-specific design approach, exploring the interdependencies and contradictions inherent in dynamic cultural and ecological systems. Winner of many awards Turf played a major role in the Sydney 2000 Games, and works on a wide range of projects including urban spaces and parks, waterfronts and waterways, corporate and campus facilities, and environmental remediation. In 2004 Turf designed the award winning Salad Bar, exhibited in the Botanic Gardens as part of the Year of the Built Environment.

Light refreshments will be provided.

7. Stand Up Against Poverty and for the MDGs, Worldwide, Oct 15-16

What is STAND UP?
STAND UP is a global advocacy effort to set an official Guinness World Record - the greatest number of people ever to STAND UP Against Poverty and for the Millennium Development Goals - on October 15-16 2006. Within a 24-hour period, a minimum of 10,000 people must physically and symbolically "STAND UP" to communicate their desire to fight poverty and to hold their governments and leaders accountable for promises to end poverty by 2015. The purpose of this action is to raise awareness of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and to publicly demonstrate to policy makers the growing global support for the achievement of the MDGs and for the strengthening of development policies in both Northern and Southern countries.

STAND UP is a mobilization initiative designed to coincide with global mobilizations around the International Day of Poverty Eradication and the White Band Day of the Global Call to Action against Poverty. It relies fully on citizen participation in that it mobilizes all individuals, everywhere, to take part in local, group events around the world through which they use their bodies (rather than their voices) as concrete symbols of MDG advocacy. To ensure the inclusion of those not physically able to stand up, a symbolic act of raising a hand, wearing a white band (the symbol of the global fight against poverty), or holding up a banner with the "Stand Up Against Poverty” message will also be counted.

What are we doing in Aus?
In Australia, we will be having lots of local actions - in schools, universities, workplaces and churches around the country. There will also be a large-scale lunchtime event in Martin Place, Sydney, which is being coordinated through the Sydney working group. Updates will be added to the Make Poverty History website on a weekly basis to see where the local events will be taking place.

Stand Up Resources:
We will be providing central resources for those who wish to organise their own STAND UP event. There will be:
· guides to how to run a stand up event in your school, workplace, university or church - downloadable from the website this week (www.makepovertyhistory.org.au)
· flyers (A5) and posters (A4) which you can update with specific details on your local event then download and photocopy - this week
· generic printed flyers available for distribution - from next week
· other resources such as promotional DVD's, MPH brochures etc - available soon

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?
Monitored by Guinness World Records the STAND UP challenge will take place between 8pm (AEST) 15 October to 8pm (AEST) 16 October. During this time thousands of people will be standing up all over the world. In schools, universities, offices, churches, town halls and at sporting events and concerts. Either join one of these events or gather your friends, colleagues and family and create your own STAND UP event.

HOW CAN I ORGANISE MY OWN EVENT?

1. Identify a local public space which is in a central location –town or village square, city hall, marketplace, park, school, office, university campus, etc.

2. Decide on event theme: e.g. music concert, theatre group, dance performance, carnival, rap concert, street theatre, film screening or just a simple gathering of friends, family and colleagues.

3. Decide on who will lead the event. A person from within your group or a high profile person/celebrity from the community. They can be asked to be master of ceremonies at the event.

4. Inform everyone via e-mail, letter, fliers, posters etc about this mobilization day. Invite them to come and join this global challenge.

5. Where appropriate inform relevant local or national media that event is taking place.

I have an existing event on the 15-16 October, can I still be involved in STAND UP?

YES, the STAND UP moment has been designed so that it can also be inserted into existing events that are already taking place.
Some examples of this could be:
· Sunday Church Services or other faith based gatherings after 8pm: Engage faith leaders to lead their congregations in a STAND UP Moment during Church service;
· Football and other sports matches: Insert a STAND UP moment into half time at football and other sports events;
· Clubs and student groups: Gather your members and have a STAND UP moment during your regular events and meeting;
Schools and Universities: Engage schools to hold a Stand Up moment on Monday morning;
· Corporations: Engage your company to gather their employees on Monday and hold a Stand Up moment.

HOW DO I ORGANISE A STAND UP MOMENT?
The actual STAND UP moment must be coordinated to take place at a suitable time during your event. The following steps should be taken:

1. A celebrity, mayor, group leader, society president, CEO or other relevant figure (“an announcer”) will ask everyone gathered to come together and sit/kneel down.

2. The announcer gives a brief explanation of the STAND UP initiative. Why we are doing this: A world record attempt to STAND UP Against poverty, in support of the MDGS, for promises that must be kept to end poverty by 2015

3. The announcer asks the gathered crowd to count down from ten with them and then at “0” everyone will STAND UP together for one minute. (Disabled people can perform any appropriate action to show they are taking a stand or just be present).

4. During this one minute the “announcer” or other appropriate figure reads the STAND UP pledge on behalf of those gathered - the pledge will be available on the website soon.

5. After the STAND UP moment and the reading of the pledge the “announcer” informs the audience that “x” number of people have Stood Up at this event and their efforts will be logged as part of the record setting attempt and total numbers of people Standing Up around the world against poverty.

6. After this the event can continue as scheduled. Although don’t forget to take pictures and register your event so that it is counted for the world record attempt!

HOW DO I REGISTER MY EVENT?
Please e-mail us at mph@acfid.asn.au if you are planning to organize an event with the following information:
Your name
Organisation
Contact information
Location and date of event
Brief outline of event
Estimated number of people that will STAND UP

HOW CAN I BE COUNTED FOR THE GUINNESS WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT?
If you are attending an existing event, you will automatically be counted and registered by event organizers. If you are organizing your own event you will need to register your STAND UP numbers online for them to be counted.

Numbers can be submitted by completing the registration form at the Make Poverty History web-site by 8pm AEST on Oct 16th:

Who’s involved with STAND UP?
For the STAND UP challenge the Millennium Campaign will be joining forces with a wide range of partners across the world, including the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP), Make Poverty History, trade unions, faith based groups, local governments, youth groups, Parliamentarians, sporting associations, media and other key actors.

The STAND UP challenge is designed to coincide with global mobilizations around the International Day of Poverty Eradication and the White Band Day of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty on October 17th.

Why do you want people to STAND UP?
The act of Standing Up Against Poverty is a strong symbolic statement. We hope to have a strong political impact by telling our leaders and the world that hundreds and thousand of people, all over the world have mobilized publicly to demand that poverty eradication and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals are a political priority and that there are no excuses for not achieving these Goals by 2015.

Can disabled people be included in the STAND UP challenge?
To ensure the inclusion of those not physically able to STAND UP i.e. disabled people, a symbolic act of raising a hand, wearing a white band or holding up a banner with the “Stand Up Against Poverty” message on it will also be counted. In these cases, rather than rising from a sitting position, symbolically “standing up” will also be taken to mean “taking a stand” against poverty.

What time does the STAND UP challenge start and finish?
The STAND Up challenge will start at 8pm (AEST) on Sunday 15 October and finish at 8pm (AEST) on Monday 16 October. We only have 24 hours!

My event falls out of this time slot, can it still be counted?
No, the above time period cannot be changed to accommodate individual events. However the STAND UP challenge is part of a month of mobilization around poverty eradication ending on October 17th so please let us know about your events so your initiative can be logged as part of this wider month of action.

Poverty Eradication - Poverty & Biodiversity?
http://projects.takingitglobal.org/Pov-Campaign

A paper entitled, Poverty, Development, and Biodiversity Conservation: Shooting in the Dark?, written by Arun Agrawal and Kent Redford and published by the Wildlife Conservation Society looks at the linkages between poverty alleviation and biodiversity conservation. The paper examines the conceptual discussion around poverty and biodiversity, and the analyses three interventions: community-based wildlife management; extractive reserves; and ecotourism. The main goal of the paper is to show that widespread differences in how poverty and biodiversity are understood, and limited attention to contextual particularities of empirical interventions, mean that existing empirical studies are poor guides to policy and systemic theoretical insights into the conditions under which poverty alleviation and biodiversity conservation may be compatible.

Raising Their Voices: A global compilation of reports from youth campaigning for the Millennium Development Goals

This report is a compilation of activities carried out by young people around the world, many of which were motivated by the MDG Youth Campaign Kit. The Kit was developed through a partnership between the UN Millennium Campaign, TakingITGlobal, and the Global Youth Action Network, and aims to provide young people with the necessary information and tools they need to start their own MDG campaign. The report also hopes to inspire even more young people to take action in their own communities by telling them about the activities that have already been carried out by others. The report is available online at: http://research.takingitglobal.org/TIGMDG.pdf
