3. THE CHANGE AGENCY: COMMUNITY ORGANISING WORKSHOP, Oct 28, Sydney

COMMUNITY ORGANISING
One-day workshop
Friday 28 October 9:00am-5:00pm
Centre for Popular Education
University of Technology, Sydney
Room 2.470 (level 2), 235 Jones Street, Broadway
(next to the UTS Tower on Broadway, walking distance from Central railway station)

When governments are beholden to big business and elections don’t feel like satisfactory inputs into the direction of your community and the country, get active! Come to this workshop on community organising. Learn skills on developing strategies, involving your community, building active participation, educating, and working for long term change. Community organising is a way of thinking about an environmental or social problem to enable effective community strategising, planning and action. Sometimes described as 'direct action organising' it is based on three central aims:
1. Win real, immediate, concrete improvements in people’s lives
2. Give people a sense of their own power
3. Alter the relations of power.

A community organising approach advocates issue campaigning, an approach geared toward issues rather than problems. This workshop will introduce key community organising principles and give you an opportunity to strategise about your social change campaigns and projects from a different perspective.

Workshop topics include:
Defining attributes of community-organising
Exploring differences between community organising, development, service delivery and advocacy approaches to social change
Cutting issues, identifying targets and organising accountability sessions
Developing campaign strategies

Facilitators:
Dr James Whelan is an activist researcher who completed his PhD in activist education for effective environmental advocacy. He currently works for the Environmental Sciences Faculty at Griffith as researcher and lecturer and has more than fifteen years experience as a campaigner and community worker.
Sam La Rocca is an activist educator and organiser who co-directs The Change Agency. She recently completed an activist research project investigating the factors influencing participation in social movements. Sam has been involved in grassroots environmental justice organising in Australlia and abroad for more than ten years.

5. NEW BOOK: ABOUT TIME: SPEED, SOCIETY, PEOPLE & THE ENVIRONMENT

We are pleased to announce the publication on September 20th 2005 of:

ABOUT TIME
SPEED, SOCIETY, PEOPLE AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Edited by Tim Aldrich, Forum for the Future, UK
September 2005 | 160pp | 210 x 148 mm
Paperback: ISBN 1 874719 91 8 | GBP16.95 USD35.00

WHERE DOES all the time go?

Despite the burgeoning army of machines designed to save us time - from cars and aeroplanes to dishwashers and microwaves - we don't seem to have any more of it on our hands. We simply fill the space we clear with more things to do - consuming more, spending more - and then look around for new ways of saving time. And so we spiral onwards, upwards, ever faster. Being busy has become a habit, and a habit that gives us high status - busy people are important people. The business of business is busy-ness.

But the fallout from a society hooked on speed is everywhere. It's affecting our health: 60 per cent of the adult population in the UK report that they suffer from stress, and more than half of these say that this has worsened over the last 12 months. It's affecting our family life, with a quarter of British families sharing a meal together only once a month. And it affects our environment too: air travel is a major source of carbon dioxide emissions, accelerating climate change as we speed around the world

Sustainable development is all about time. It's about trying to safeguard the health of the planet, and the people it supports, indefinitely, unconstrained by time. The idea of time offers a novel perspective on what sustainable development is all about. Looking at issues affecting society and the environment through the prism of time conveys the urgency of the challenge and leads us to solutions we might not have thought of before.

About Time, edited by the think-tank Forum for the Future, brings together ten of the world's leading thinkers and writers, including Will Hutton, Baroness Mary Warnock, Sir Martin Rees, Ghillean Prance, Jay Griffiths (the author of the bestselling Pip Pip) and Jonathon Porritt from disciplines including biology, business, sociology, ethnography, astronomy, philosophy, politics, history and sustainability in a collection of intriguing essays exploring the issue of time and how it relates to the environment

About Time is a high-profile collection aimed at creating debate about where the values of our contemporary society are taking us. It will foster reflective thinking about different aspects of time, using the concept of time to communicate and illuminate the idea of sustainable development and question our idolatry of speed. In doing so, it aims to inspire and help decision-makers in business, government and elsewhere to appreciate the challenges of sustainable development, and inspire individuals to create.

For readers of No Logo and Longitude, this book provides a thought-provoking twist, bringing together time and sustainability in a refreshing, provocative and accessible way.

The European Reference Point for Technology Transfer for Sustainable Development in Hamburg, Germany (http://www.tutech.de/sd) is pleased to announce a call for contributions for a major publication addressing the issue of sustainability communication in the Baltic and beyond: the "Handbook of Sustainability Communication". The Handbook will report, document and disseminate experiences, projects and practical initiatives related to sustainability communication performed by non-government agencies, international organisations, practitioners and universities both in industrialised and developing nations, offering a picture of the state-of-the art in the field across the world.

It is envisaged that around 50 initiatives will be documented in the "Handbook of Sustainability Communication". This authoritative publication will offer a one-stop information source on leading initiatives on sustainability communication and it is hoped to both support on-going efforts and stimulate new ones.

4. International Day of Ceasefire Celebrations in NSW, Movie screening, Sydney, Wed 21st Sept

MEDIA RELEASE: International Day of Ceasefire Celebrations in NSW

In 2002 the United Nations passed a resolution marking September 21 as a permanent day of peace. The Australian Federal Parliament has given its support to the day and on September 21, UNYA NSW plans to celebrate this amazing event at the NSW Commission for Children and Young People, Level 2, 411 Elizabeth St, Surry Hills, Sydney, beginning at 5.00pm.

To celebrate the International Day of Peace, a UN sanctioned global ceasefire day, the United Nations Youth Association of NSW is hosting a movie night where an exciting film documenting the struggle, will be shown. The movie night will take place in Central at the NSW Commission for Children and Young People (just 30 seconds from the station).

PEACE ONE DAY is the story of one mans attempts to persuade the global community, via the United Nations, to officially sanction a global ceasefire day; a day of non-violence; a day of Peace.

This exciting documentary charts the remarkable 6-year journey of the filmmaker as he meets heads of governments, Nobel Peace Laureates, aid agencies, freedom fighters, media moguls, the innocent victims of war and eventually, the UN and its Secretary General, Kofi Annan. The movie shows global citizens, but particularly young people, that an individual genuinely can make a difference: The UN International Day of Peace is now fixed in the calendar on 21st September annually.

UNYA has shown this film to thousands of young people in the past six months and has found that young people of all walks of life relate to the film and are inspired to make a difference. As a well established youth run organisation, UNYA is best placed to assist these young people with their project ideas.

The presentation of Peace One Day will occur on International Peace Day, Wednesday September 21, 5.00pm at the NSW Commission for Children and Young People, Level 2, 407 Elizabeth Street Surry Hills. The movie lasts for 80minutes and thus the event should conclude by 7.00pm. Those in attendance will have a unique opportunity to engage with other young people at the conclusion of the event with follow up activities planned by UNYA NSW.

10. The future of water - Brisbane Institute 20 Sept

THE FUTURE OF WATER
Dianne Thorley
TUESDAY 20 SEPTEMBER 2005
Seminar commences 6.00pm (doors open 5.30pm)

In many parts of Australia, demand for water is outstripping supply. Climate variability and population growth have reduced dam levels dramatically. We can no longer continue to meet our water needs with the current policy mix. New approaches need to be tried if water is to have a future.

Recycled sewage water is already available for human consumption throughout other parts of the world. Community expectations in Australia are still adjusting to this idea, but they will need to adjust quickly if our water supply is to remain secure.

Water Futures - Toowoomba is leading the way in Australia with an innovative combination of tried and tested technologies both in terms of addressing a pressing water supply problem and benefiting the environment. It aims to secure a safe supply of water to meet the future needs of Toowoomba and the region. The project draws on the best technologies currently being used in water reuse projects around the world and integrates urban, industrial, power, mining and agricultural supply and demand.

Dianne Thorley has been Mayor of Toowoomba since 2000 and is passionate about leading policy change in the area of water supply and management. She was born in Stanthorpe, trained as a nurse and has trodden a hard path and come a long way to reach the top job in Toowoomba. Instead of bringing to office the machinations and aspirations of a career politician, she utilises a wealth of life experience and, most importantly, passion, good old common sense and practicality with a down-to-earth approach to everything. Dianne is committed to seeing Toowoomba and the surrounding region realise its potential as a hub of industry, technology, commerce. She is equally passionate about everyday issues facing the residents of Toowoomba, particularly the city's youth, and is an energetic champion for the environment.
