The award is not monetary but consists of strategic, tailor-made support services with the aim to meet the develolpment needs of the award winners.

The Seed Award recognizes and rewards two levels of winners: ten finalists who will be publicized and receive limited support through capacity development activities, and five award winners, selected from the finalists, who will receive the ‘Seed Award’ that includes support services to be delivered over a period of 6-12 months. These services depend on the nature and situation of the partnerships chosen as finalists and winners, and may include activities aiming to further build the partnership, develop its capacity, increase its exposure, build its networks, and identify sources of finance.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

We welcome innovative ideas from any group in the process of planning and setting up a partnership project that:

1. involves at least three partner organizations from different stakeholder groups such as small, medium or large businesses; community-based organizations; local or international NGOs; labour unions; women’s groups; indigenous peoples organizations; research institutions; public authorities; international agencies;

3. Has the potential to contribute towards the internationally agreed goals of the Millennium Declaration and/or the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation;

4. Displays entrepreneurship in its broadest sense and is driven by local actors;

5. Helps to demonstrate innovative ways of doing business through partnerships—business as unusual—and has the potential to serve as inspiration to others; and/or

WHAT IS THE SEED INITIATIVE?

The Seed Initiative is a global network for action on sustainable development partnerships. Seed’s goal is to inspire and promote partnerships that will further the internationally agreed goals of the Millennium Declaration and the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation.

To achieve this objective the Seed Initiative has three main areas of focus:

1. Promote locally driven, entrepreneurial partnerships, through the biennial global Seed Awards, events and publications;

2. Support nascent partnerships through providing tailor-made support services to each of the Seed Awards winners that aim to meet their development needs; and

3. Increase the understanding of partnerships through conducting research activities and making lessons learned available to policy makers and practitioners.

Through these efforts the Seed Initiative is responding to the challenges that many emerging partnerships face, including the need for both technical and financial support in their pre-implementation stages. By focusing on partnerships that are still their beginning, the Initiative offers unique opportunities to support action on the ground, while capitalizing on valuable lessons learned to inform and inspire future partnerships.

Since its launch, Seed has broken new ground through:

1. Revealing the wealth of entrepreneurial partnership activity: 263 applications, involving over 1200 organizations from 66 countries, were received in response to the 1st Call for Submissions to the Seed Awards in 2004.

2. Demonstrating the high quality of partnership ideas and the maturity of the partnership approach among organizations: 78% of applications received were eligible under the multiple criteria of the Seed Awards.

3. Effectively publicizing the partnership approach to sustainable development: High visibility events, exhibitions and publications have promoted the partnership approach in general and the outstanding Seed Award finalists and winners.

4. Giving advice to over 70 nascent partnerships, extensive support to twelve finalists and tailormade long-term support to five winning partnerships.

5. Learning more about what partnerships need to succeed: Seed has been tracking the progress of winners and applicants and studied the role of local ownership and the complexities of ?nancing partnerships.
