South Asian Conference on Youth & Democracy

Date: August 12-15, 2007
Place: Pune, India

The role of young people is immense and vitally important in any
democracy. As India and Pakistan completes the celebration of sixty
years of independence on 15th August, the Centre for Youth
Development and Activities (CYDA) in association with like-minded
organizations intend to organize a 3-day international conference on
"Youth & Democracy in South Asia".

The objective of conference is to bring together, young people, youth
activists and academicians from different walks of life and
deliberate on concerns and issues of democracy in the context of
young people.

Today youth become mere spectators in the processes of development in
almost all South Asian countries. Youth in leadership is almost
vanishing and awareness as well as attitude towards civic engagement
is disappearing. The expected outcome is increased involvement of
youth in decision-making roles in democracies they represent. If the
democracies to function effectively youth shall become participants
and a participant youth shall understand the meaning of citizenship,
polices and governance and have the acquired skills to voice their
concerns and ability to make system accountable.

The Conference will aim at discussing various dimensions that youth
can and must play not only on issues that concern them but also in
the formulations of policies that affect them. Youth as well as
academicians from South Asian countries as well as a few Asia Pacific
regions are invited to participate. The conference will be
inaugurated on International Youth Day, 12th August and will end on
15 August 2007.

Those are interested to attend or presentation the paper in
conference, please send the concept paper (not more than 500 words)

IYPF April 07 Newsletter - Global Warming and Water

The April Edition - World Water Day, Global Warming and Climate Change, Follow up on World International Women's Day

front page of our website http://www.iypf.org ]

Dear friends and colleagues

Welcome to our third newsletter for 2007. We´ve warmed up now and in this edition we focus on two of the biggest global challenges of the moment - Global Warming and Water.

Thanks to human development and the globalised nature of our existence, climate change and access to clean fresh water present twin, related problems for human existence on earth at a scale we haven´t know previously. Overcoming these challenges and enacting solutions will require the best of us - good will, altruism, cooperation, collaboration, social innovation, wisdom, and perhaps most importantly, courage and hope.

As young professionals, we have a central role to play in addressing the climate and water challenges. We have skills and expertise; we have power in our communities and in our work places; we have resources at our disposal that many others in our societies do not have; we have grown up in a globalised world and have some insight in to the interconnection of the lives of those on the planet; and, hopefully, we have the motivation to step up to the challenge given the potential impact of global warming and water scarcity on the next 50-70 years of our lives.

In addition to our themes of climate change and water, we do some follow up on last month´s International Women´s Day theme. There are opportunities and resources for you as always, and also information on the IYPF´s 2006 Annual Report and our search for an Interim Director.

We continue our `Top Lists´, letting you know about some `hot´ new books, reports, blogs and websites, and giving you some ideas for how you can contribute to making the world a better place in April and May, such as participating in Global Youth Service Day, joining up to the global campaign for education and the campaign to end water poverty, and completing the We the People survey on the Millennium Development Goals.

Wishing you courage and hope
Cameron Neil, IYPF CEO

1. APRIL 26: TALK: SCORCHER: THE DIRTY POLITICS OF CLIMATE CHANGE: CLIVE HAMILTON: MELBOURNE

Clive Hamilton with introduction by Dr Peter Christoff
Clive's new book Scorcher: The Dirty Politics of Climate Change
Scorcher: The Dirty Politics of Climate Change -
www.readings.com.au/bookweb/details.cgi?ITEMNO=9780977594900 blows the whistle on the politics of global warming in Australia. Why have our political leaders been so slow to act? Which are the fossil-fuel lobby groups that still set the policy agenda? How many different ways can one spin, deceive, lie and obfuscate instead of facing facts and looking for the solutions that are desperately needed? Written with humour, urgency and great authority, this is the definitive account of the politics of climate change in Australia.

Hamilton is executive director of the Australia Institute, an independent think-tank based at the Australian National University. He is an authority on the science and politics of climate change,
having been involved in this area as a participant and observer for many years.

4. APRIL 24 OR 30: WORKSHOP: COMMUNITY ORGANISING: CONFRONTATION VS CONSENSUS: MELBOURNE, BRISBANE

Community organising: confrontation vs consensus an early evening workshop with Randy Stoecker
In the good ol´ days, every social change group knew how to do a street protest, or an occupation, or something even more confrontational. Today, many social change groups avoid any kind of confrontation in favour of consensus models. Is confrontation really irrelevant to today's social change efforts? Are consensus models really effective?

This workshop will draw on participants' experiences with confrontation and consensus processes to better understand the strengths and weaknesses of each. Then, using a political opportunity structure model, you will learn how to analyse your political context to better decide when, where, and how to use a combination of confrontation and consensus strategies.

5. AUSTRALIAN YOUTH CLIMATE SURVEY

The Australian Student Environment Network and other member groups of the Australian Youth Climate Coalition are undertaking a Youth Climate Questionnaire. The aim of the questionnaire is gather the ideas and opinions of youth on climate change and to start to articulate a youth vision for the future. We believe that this questionnaire will inform the climate movement about how to better
engage and mobilize young people around the issue of climate change.

As such it would be fantabulous if you could get people in your organisations, your friends and random people on the street (especially new and not involved people) to fill in the questionnaire. The questionnaire is up and running until Wednesday 11 April - we have three days left to get as many responses as possible.

So check out and fill it out at
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=557413610292

If you have any questions or clarifications please don't hesitate to call Ben on 0410 545 590 or call Nicky on 0423 717 567.

Thank you for your help, we hope it goes well and look forward to seeing the filled in surveys

Cheers
