2007 International Essay Competition: Engaging Youth in Reform

Young people can be a powerful force for change! As future reformers,
young people (18-30) have innovative ideas on how to solve the
political, economic, and social problems facing their countries.
However, they often lack the voice to bring these ideas to
policymakers. Simply, young people are often regarded as recipients
of reforms, not active participants in the reform process. CIPE´s
essay contest gives you the opportunity to share your ideas about
citizenship, democratic and market-oriented reform, youth leadership,
and the ways that your country can create avenues for youth to
participate in the political and economic spheres. We encourage you
to get thinking, get involved, and use your own experiences to
develop concrete solutions to these development issues. A $1,000
honorarium will be given for each winning essay. You can download a
flyer about the contest, including guidelines, at
http://www.cipe.org/programs/women/pdf/CIPEcontest.pdf. Visit the
essay contest website at
http://www.cipe.org/programs/women/essay.php.

Contest Guidelines and Eligibility: Open to students and young
professionals aged 18-30.

Special weight will be given to essays submitted by citizens of non-
OECD countries.

The essay topic categories are as follows:
1. Citizenship in a Democratic Society,
2. Educational Reform and Employment Opportunities
3. Entrepreneurship and Leadership

In each category, a first, second, and third place winner will be
chosen by a panel of CIPE staff and international partners. The three
winning essays from each category will be published as Economic
Reform Feature Service articles. CIPE will provide each of the nine
winners an honorarium of $1,000. Other essays of merit will be
considered for publication as well. CIPE may translate certain
articles into other languages, including Arabic, Russian, Spanish, or
French. Judging Criteria Essays will be judged on clarity,
originality, and their contribution to the understanding of
development issues facing countries. The logic of the ideas expressed
is more important than perfect English grammar. Essays will be
evaluated by a panel of judges comprising CIPE staff and CIPE´s
international partners.

Formatting Guidelines: All essays must be written in English, and
must be original and unpublished, with a word count of 2,000-4,000,
and must be submitted by May 31, 2007.

The Center for International Private Enterprise is a non-profit
affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and one of the four core
institutes of the National Endowment for Democracy. For more
information about CIPE, please visit www.cipe.org.

Change of Venue and Date for ICASA 2008

The Society for AIDS in Africa (SAA) hereby announces the change in
the venue and date of the 15th International Conference on AIDS and
Sexually Transmitted Infections in Africa (ICASA), which was
originally scheduled to take place in Libreville, Gabon in December
2007. The next ICASA is now scheduled to hold in Dakar, Senegal from
8-11 December 2008.

This decision was taken by the Executive Council of the SAA in
conjunction with the International Steering Committee during the
meeting held in Libreville, Gabon in January 2007 after it became
clear that it would be impossible to hold the ICASA in Gabon owing to
logistical problems that could not be overcome by December 2007. It
therefore became necessary to appoint a new chair for the 15th ICASA
in the person of Professor Souleymane Mboup who has already put all
machinery in place to ensure a highly successful ICASA in 2008.

We apologize for any inconveniency hereby caused to all stakeholders,
and well wishers. We wish to thank the Gabonese government for the
effort made to host ICASA 2007. We also thank the Senegalese
Government for accepting to host the conference in 2008. For further
information, please visit the SAA website at www.saafrica.org.

Announcer: Professor Femi Soyinka - The President, Society for AIDS
in Africa.

IYPS2008: PLANS BEGIN FOR THE NEXT INTERNATIONAL YOUNG PROFESSIONALS

Following and building on the success of previous International Young
Professionals Summits in 2001 and 2004, our next summit IYPS2008
seems set to move to Manchester, England in the Summer of next year.

IYPF President, Sarah-Jo Dawson, has volunteered to chair a local and
an international team of volunteers who will organize this conference,
with the core theme being One Planet.

"I see the Summits as being extremely important in the IYPF journey"
says Sarah-Jo. "Previous Summits have seen the formation of new
projects and collaborations. They allow IYPF members to meet face-to-
face and bring in international expertise and interest".

Having had both previous summits in Australia, it is an ambitious
move to have the Summit in England. A new team will have to be formed, who
will hopefully bring in their own new ideas as well as benefiting
from the experience of previous Summit organizers. "The idea of having a
local and an international team is to get as many IYPF members
involved as possible, whilst having a core team in the UK dealing
with the administrative side of things" said SJ. "We Aussies are very
happy to hand the baton over to the UK team and are sure they´ll do a
fantastic job" said CEO Cameron Neil.

Getting involved

There are several ways IYPF members can get involved at this stage: -
Join the UK or international organising teams - Send in ideas for
conference themes - Send in any ideas for guest speakers, workshops,
fundraising or UK based networks

Please contact us via iyps2008@iypf.org
