2. SweatFree Communities International Conference: April 7-9 [USA]

Register now at www.sweatfree.org
Join us at the SweatFree Communities International Conference, April 7-9, 2006, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA!

Our third annual gathering is a place for anti-sweatshop activists to share experiences, learn vital organizing skills, and build joint strategy. If you are campaigning for sweatshop-free government or religious purchasing or if you are interested in learning more and getting active in the movement, this gathering is not to be missed!

There are many exciting recent advances in the sweatfree movement. In the United States a few cities have put real teeth in sweatfree procurement policies with provisions and funding for independent monitoring of supplier factories. We are also taking the first steps toward city and state consolidation of purchasing power and collaboration in the enforcement of policies. In Canada, nine Catholic school boards in the province of Ontario have agreed to pool their resources to monitor and investigate supplier factories. In Europe, increasing numbers of cities in the Netherlands, Belgium, France,Germany, Sweden, Spain and elsewhere are adopting sweatfree procurement resolutions with tougher verification standards. There is real power in government procurement that we can control democratically. Yet, our movement is not yet as strong as it needs to be to win the big battles against sweatshop exploitation and create worker-friendly rules for the global economy.

Globally workers and their advocates are finding creative ways to meet the challenges of plant closings and repression exacerbated by last year´s phase out of the Multi-Fiber Agreement. Their strategies include community-based education and organizing, worker-led monitoring committees, union organizing, and worker ownership and control of production. What does international solidarity look and feel like in the context of these worker struggles? What is the role of sweatfree procurement in supporting worker struggles in different parts of the world, in different industries, and in the fields?

Bringing together sweatfree campaigns, fair trade organizations, producers, unions, and worker advocacy organizations in the United States, Canada, Europe, Latin America and China, the SweatFree Communities International Conference is an opportunity to make connections and build a stronger international movement for worker justice. Beyond the core workshops that introduce participants to movement history and sweatfree government procurement campaign strategy, there will be exchanges with worker organizers and U.S. immigrant workers; discussion forums on sweatfree marketing strategies and on independent monitoring and policy enforcement; workshops on local, fair trade, and organic procurement, and much more.

We are excited to host this event with the Resource Center of the Americas. Among its human rights and economic justice programs, the Resource Center´s sweatfree campaigns have resulted in sweatfree policies in the school district and city of Minneapolis. Its youth organizer program is planning the youth section of the conference. A workshop by its worker rights center will link global impacts of sweatshops to local immigrant worker struggles. Latin American music and food at the conference reflects the Resource Center's cross-cultural programming.

Other conference highlights include a screening of Maquilapolis -City of Factories, a new film by and about maquila workers in Tijuana,Mexico, who will be present to lead discussion. Concurrent with the conference will also be an art exhibit with paintings of garment workers from 22 countries by Washington State artist Janet Essley.

3.The Third V. T. Vittachi International Conference: July 2-5 [Morocco]

oeRETHINKING EDUCATIONAL CHANGE
Al Akhawayn University, Ifrane, Morocco July 2 - 5, 2006

Experiencing Empowering and Transforming We believe education should have the power to transform lives,
enabling continued profound positive change and personal growth, to ultimately build a better world. For such growth to occur, however, our educational institutions need to understand transformation and recognise that radical changes may be necessary for a fundamental institutional renewal. Guerrand-Hermès Foundation for Peace and Al Akhawayn University have come together to organise an international conference that explores the key question How do our educational institutions need to change in order for learning to become genuinely transformational? Our goals for this conference are ambitious, as we set out to provide students, faculty, administrators, and educational officials of all levels with confidence and courage for institutional innovation through a profound shared experience and exploration of personal transformation. Together we aim to construct an open and safe space and an honest collegial environment where educational leaders, practitioners and students are able to engage in dialogue, interaction and reflection. Through this experiential and interactive process, we will discover, define and inspire personal and institutional change in an innovative, open and rigorous way. Whether you are a student, faculty member, administrator or government official, we encourage you to join us in this important conference and consider what transformation means to you and your institution. INNOVATIVE
APPROACHES The conference is structured as a process of open, experiential sharing, reflection and mutual support, based on the following three beliefs:

- decision-making about education is an inclusive process that involves the full spectrum of stakeholders " from students to government officials. Hence we strongly encourage participation by multi-constituency teams from or concerned with educational institutions

- institutional change begins with transformation within the individual. A safe, open and honest atmosphere is therefore a prerequisite for personal reflection, in order that every participant can speak from their own experiences and feelings with confidence.

- understanding what ~transformationTM means in the context of oneTMs own education involves identifying the personal and societal ideals that one wants to pursue. Once these goals have been identified, it is possible to undertake tangible efforts to achieve them.

CONFERENCE ACTIVITIES
Besides inspirational keynote speakers, an international team of trained facilitators will lead small workshops exploring five different and inter-related themes.

1. Personal Transformation:
Open space meetings and experiential exercises so that each participant has the opportunity to undergo a transforming and enriching personal experience at the conference
2.Identifying Educational Values and Ideals: A dialogic and interactive process for participants to establish common goals for education through small group discussions focusing on the question oeWhat counts as transformation in an educational experience?
3. Diagnosis of Institutions and Processes: A orward-looking and critical review of existing practices and institutional culture: oeHow do our own particular educational institutions and/or personal learning processes within that institution need to change in order for them to be genuinely transformational? The purpose of exploring this question is to provide the opportunity for participants to identify key actions through which they can affect change.
4.Action Plan and Conclusion: An action plan being developed by institutional teams or as individuals: The goal is for each person to formulate a practical action-plan that can help make a significant difference to their educational institution or/and to their own learning processes.
5.Post-Conference Workshop: Faculty and institutional leaders are given the opportunity to spend an extra day, after the formal closing, to analyse the results of the conference and formulate recommendations.

9.Worlds Apart: Measuring International and Global Inequality [Global]

The differences between the richest and poorest individuals around the world are growing. Recent data show that the richest 5 percent of people receive one-third of total global income, as much as the poorest 80 percent. In "Worlds Apart: Measuring International and Global Inequality", World Bank economist Branko Milanovic analyzes world income distribution data using, for the first time, household survey data from over a hundred countries, and offers amore accurate way of measuring inequality among individuals.

10.Resources on Food Security [Global]

The International Food Policy Research Institute has published a report on food security outlook in Africa over the next two decades. The report, "Looking Ahead: Long-Term Prospects for Africa's Agricultural Development and Food Security, " projects that child malnutrition in Africa will escalate over the next two decades and the continent will fail to meet the Millennium Development Goal to cut child malnutrition in half by 2015 unless more aggressive measures are taken now.

The report also projects the impact of improved policies and increased investments. Under the "vision scenario, " the number of hungry children in Africa would decrease dramatically to 9.4 million by 2025 if policies and investments were put in place today to accelerate agricultural productivity and economic growth, reduce population growth rates, and improve access to education, health care, and clean water.

11. World Future Council Initiative [Global]

http://www.worldfuturecouncil.org/

Introduction

Today humanity has unprecedented powers to damage the planet and affect the well-being of present and future generations, yet we seem powerless to address the global and long-term impacts of our actions.

We need to challenge the short-term commercial thinking that currently has veto power over global decision-making.

Values, Vision, Solutions

The Council, made up of 100 globally recognized wise elders, pioneers and youth leaders, will work with decision-makers to provide direction for a sustainable future. It will represent the shared ethical values of citizens worldwide. When needed, it will commission research and recommend new policies and laws to protect the welfare of the planet and its citizens.

Executive Summary

Despite unprecedented knowledge, skills and resources, humanity is today on a collision course with its own future. International opinion surveys clearly indicate that shared value-priorities exist across cultural traditions all over the world. The Council will be advised by up to 24 small expert commissions focusing on key environmental, social and economic issues.

Founding Councilors

Details of the first 15 founding councilors for the World Future Council.

12. World Bank Seminar Series on Global Issues Available Online [Global]

Effects of the global issues, such as: global poverty, communicable diseases, education for all, migration, climate change, and others have a tremendous effect on international development. These issues are expected to become even more acute as in the next 50 years, the global population will increase from 6 to 9 billion people and the global economy will double its current size. The mechanisms for addressing global issues are still evolving and will be challenged even more as time passes and world s population and economy expand.

In this context, the World Bank launched a Global Issues Seminar Series in October 2005 to promote better understanding of the nature and significance of global issues, and to generate discussion on the actions that are already under way, and what more needs to be done. This seminar series is open to everyone, and specifically to senior undergraduate and graduate students of the social sciences, international development, public policy and business. All sessions are now available online.
